A field service engineer for a machine builder installs, commissions, repairs, and upgrades equipment at customer factories.

On paper, the role can sound exciting: international travel, advanced machinery, independence, and a different technical challenge every week. All of that can be true.

It can also mean delayed flights, twelve-hour shifts, pressure from an angry production manager, and troubleshooting an unfamiliar machine while several people wait for you to restart it.

The job can rapidly build your technical skills, but the lifestyle is not suitable for everyone.

You Rarely Have a Normal Working Week

Your schedule is controlled largely by customer projects and machine failures.

One week, you may work at the company workshop preparing a machine. The next, you may fly to another country for commissioning. A planned four-day service visit can become ten days when parts are delayed or unexpected problems appear.

Travel requirements vary enormously. Some regional service engineers return home most evenings. International commissioning roles may involve spending more than half the year away. Current machine-builder vacancies range from roughly 50% travel to roles describing up to 85% travel or approximately 200 travel days annually.

Before accepting a position, ask for the actual number of nights the current team spent away last year. “Frequent travel” is too vague to judge the lifestyle.

Commissioning Is More Than Switching On the Machine

When a new machine reaches the customer, the field engineer may help with installation checks, power-up, I/O testing, drive configuration, PLC and HMI testing, mechanical adjustments, process setup, acceptance testing, and operator training.

The machine may have worked correctly at the builder’s factory but behave differently after transport and installation.

You may discover:

  • Reversed motor phases
  • Damaged or incorrectly wired sensors
  • Network-address conflicts
  • Incorrect utility pressure or voltage
  • Mechanical misalignment
  • Missing safety signals
  • Product behaving differently from test material
  • Interfaces that do not match surrounding equipment

Current service roles at machine builders commonly combine installation, functional commissioning, troubleshooting, PLC programming, acceptance testing, customer-requested modifications, and training of operating personnel.

The job is therefore not purely electrical, mechanical, or software-based. You need enough knowledge across several disciplines to identify which area is causing the problem.

Troubleshooting Happens Under Pressure

Troubleshooting in a training laboratory is calm. Troubleshooting at a customer site is different.

Production may already be behind schedule. Managers want a completion time. Operators may say the machine “worked before you changed it.” Your head office may be closed because of a time-zone difference.

A good field engineer works methodically despite this pressure.

You need to confirm the symptom, review alarms, inspect the physical machine, check inputs and outputs, compare software versions, and test one possibility at a time.

Randomly changing PLC logic is dangerous. The actual problem may be a loose terminal, incorrect sensor position, failed valve, missing interlock, mechanical obstruction, or operator setting.

You must also communicate progress without promising a restart time you cannot support.

A useful update sounds like:

The PLC is issuing the command, but the drive is not reporting ready. I am now checking the safety input, drive alarm history, and field wiring. I will confirm the next action after those checks.

That is more credible than repeatedly saying the machine will be running “in another hour.”

Customer Communication Is Part of the Technical Job

You represent the machine builder while working at the customer’s site.

The customer may judge the entire company based on how you behave during one difficult commissioning project.

You need to explain faults clearly, document unresolved items, train operators patiently, and avoid blaming the customer’s electricians or maintenance team.

At the same time, you must protect the agreed project scope. Customers often request additional screens, recipes, sensors, reports, and sequence changes while you are already on-site.

Some changes are necessary to complete the original specification. Others are new work that should be approved commercially.

A strong field engineer recognises the difference and records every change.

The Travel Is Not a Permanent Holiday

Travelling for work is not the same as travelling for leisure.

You may see interesting countries, but much of the experience consists of airports, rental cars, industrial areas, hotels, and long days inside factories.

Long commissioning projects can last several weeks, and service technicians may travel alone before meeting a changing team at the customer site. Short overhaul visits can be even more intense because the production line must return to service quickly.

Frequent travel can affect relationships, exercise, sleep, diet, and routine. It is difficult to plan weekends when a project may overrun.

Ask how the employer handles:

  • Weekend work
  • Travel time
  • Overtime
  • Daily allowances
  • Rest days after long trips
  • Hotel and flight booking
  • Laundry during extended assignments
  • Emergency return travel
  • Rotation between engineers

A high salary may be less attractive when calculated against the total hours spent travelling and working.

You Need Strong Documentation Habits

Before leaving a customer site, you may need to provide:

  • Updated software backups
  • Parameter files
  • Service reports
  • Acceptance-test results
  • Outstanding-item lists
  • Photographs
  • Parts used
  • Operator-training records
  • Recommendations for further work

Record changes while they are fresh. After visiting several similar machines, it becomes surprisingly difficult to remember which customer received which PLC revision.

Never keep the only current machine backup on your laptop.

The Job Can Accelerate Your Career

Field service exposes you to more faults, machines, customers, and operating conditions than many factory-based roles.

You learn how equipment is installed, how operators actually use it, how designs fail in the real world, and which solutions remain reliable after handover.

Successful engineers can progress into:

The experience is especially valuable if you eventually want to become an independent integrator or service contractor.

Questions to Ask Before Accepting the Job

Ask the employer:

  • What was the team’s average travel percentage last year?
  • How long is a normal trip?
  • How often do trips overrun?
  • Is travel time paid?
  • How are weekends and overtime compensated?
  • Who supports me when I cannot solve a fault?
  • Will I travel alone during the first year?
  • Which PLCs, drives, robots, and machines will I support?
  • How much training is provided before customer visits?
  • How much notice is normally given before travel?

The answers matter more than phrases such as “dynamic environment” and “opportunity to see the world.”

The Honest Verdict

Field service engineering can be one of the fastest ways to become technically capable and commercially aware.

You gain independence, practical troubleshooting ability, customer experience, and exposure to complete machines. You may also sacrifice routine, personal time, and predictable working hours.

The job suits people who enjoy solving unfamiliar problems, can stay calm under pressure, and do not mind frequent changes of location.

It is a poor fit for someone who needs a stable schedule, dislikes customer conflict, or sees travel mainly as a benefit rather than a major working condition.

Do not accept the role based only on the machine technology or salary. Understand the travel policy, support structure, overtime rules, and real number of days away from home.
