Commissioning a VFD can be simple, but it is also very easy to miss small details.
Wrong motor data, poor cable routing, bad shield grounding, brake timing problems, long motor cable issues, or skipped auto-tune steps can all cause faults later. Sometimes the drive is blamed, but the real problem is in the setup.
To make VFD commissioning easier, I created a Quick VFD Commissioning Checklist in Google Sheets format.
This checklist is made for electricians, maintenance technicians, automation beginners, and anyone working with Variable Frequency Drives.
What Is Included?
The checklist includes important VFD commissioning checks such as:
Motor nameplate data
Power and control cable routing
Shielded cable checks
Motor cable length
dV/dt filter or reactor requirement
Motor lead wiring
Brake opening and closing timing
Regenerative energy checks
Braking resistor checks
Motor auto-tune / identification
Low-speed test
Acceleration and deceleration ramp settings
Encoder feedback checks for closed-loop applications
There is also space to mark each task as done, write comments, enter measured values, and record who checked it.
Why Use This Checklist?
A checklist helps you avoid guessing.
Before blaming the VFD, you can go through the most common commissioning points one by one. This makes troubleshooting more organized and helps catch simple problems before they become expensive downtime.
It is not a replacement for the drive manual, but it is a useful practical tool to keep beside you during startup and commissioning.

Use it as a starting point and adjust it for your own machines, company standards, and VFD brand.
