Crankshaft and camshaft sensors help the engine computer determine speed and position. A missing crankshaft signal can cause a crank-no-start because the computer may not know the engine is rotating.
Symptoms can include intermittent stalling, long cranking, no start, misfires, reduced power, or fault codes. Heat-related failures are common enough that a vehicle may stop when hot and restart after cooling, but this symptom is not unique to position sensors.
What to Look For
Do not confuse a reading with a conclusion. A meter showing 12 volts proves voltage is present at that moment; it does not automatically prove the circuit can deliver enough current under load.
Diagnosis should consider scan data for engine speed during cranking, sensor power and ground if applicable, wiring integrity, connector condition, and waveform testing when equipment and service procedures permit.
Do not assume every crank-no-start is a crank sensor. Fuel pressure, ignition, immobilizer authorization, timing, compression, and power supply problems can produce similar results.
Beginner Diagnostic Checklist
- Verify the exact symptom before touching anything.
- Check battery condition and obvious power/ground connections when relevant.
- Check the correct fuse and connector condition.
Stop and get help if: you cannot identify a safe test point or the vehicle may move unexpectedly.
