A short to ground occurs when a power circuit contacts ground before the intended load, allowing excessive current to flow. The fuse usually opens to protect the wiring. The diagnostic challenge is finding where the unwanted contact occurs.

If a fuse blows instantly, inspect recent repair areas, wiring near metal edges, harnesses near moving parts, and components on that circuit. Disconnecting loads one at a time can help determine whether the short is inside a component or in the wiring.

What to Look For

Compare both sides of the circuit whenever possible. Two similar lamps, two power windows, or left and right wheel sensors can provide a useful reference when one side behaves differently.

A current-limited test method or resettable circuit breaker may be used by experienced technicians, but beginners should not improvise with oversized fuses or unfused jumper wires. The protection device is telling you that the circuit is unsafe.
