Before you begin: Follow the machine documentation, risk assessment, site procedures and lockout/tagout requirements. Commissioning can expose personnel to electrical energy, stored pressure and unexpected motion. Never defeat a safety function merely to make a test easier. Examples and diagrams are generic and must be checked against the actual machine.

Analog outputs command devices such as control valves, VFD speed references and proportional actuators. Commissioning must verify both the electrical signal and the receiving device response.

Why this matters during commissioning

An output can be scaled correctly in the PLC but interpreted differently by the field device. Range, polarity and fail behavior must agree at both ends.

Commissioning procedure

  1. Confirm the output type and configured range.
  2. Command 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% or other meaningful points.
  3. Measure current/voltage at the output terminals.
  4. Observe field-device indication and actual process response.
  5. Verify behavior for PLC stop, communication loss or output fault if applicable.

Common failure patterns

  • 4-20 mA output connected to a device configured for 0-20 mA.
  • Output scaled 0-100% but receiver configured in engineering units with different range.
  • Valve positioner reaches only part travel due to mechanical linkage.
  • Loss-of-signal action opposite to process requirement.

  • Measured value and test point
  • Expected value / expected state
  • Observed value / observed state
  • Pass/fail result and any deviation
  • Name/date or responsible person where required

FIELD RULE: Commission analog outputs as a chain: PLC command -> electrical signal -> device interpretation -> physical response.
