Strong technicians do not prove competence by struggling alone for hours. Escalation is a troubleshooting decision: bring in the right knowledge when the expected value exceeds the cost of waiting.
Five Principles to Use in the Field
- Escalate on safety uncertainty. If the safe method is unclear, stop and involve the appropriate responsible person. Uncertainty is itself a reason to pause.
- Escalate on specialized systems. Robotics, high-voltage equipment, safety PLCs, servo tuning, proprietary process controls, and regulated systems may require authorized expertise.
- Escalate when evidence stops improving. If repeated tests are not narrowing the fault, a fresh technical perspective can be more valuable than another hour of the same path.
- Prepare before calling. Bring symptoms, timestamps, fault codes, drawings, measurements, software versions, and what has already been tried. Good escalation saves both people time.
- Do not hide mistakes. If a change made the problem worse, say so immediately. Accurate state information matters more than protecting pride.
Pressure Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting until the entire shift is nearly over before asking for help.
- Calling a vendor with no fault code, model number, or description of tests.
- Escalating every small issue without first gathering basic evidence.
- Continuing outside your authorization because production is impatient.
A Practical Breakdown Method
- Define what is unknown.
- Determine whether the gap is safety, authority, specialized knowledge, or resources.
- Collect the minimum useful evidence package.
- Contact the appropriate person or vendor.
- Explain facts and prior tests concisely.
- Record the advice and changes made.
Scenario: A servo axis begins oscillating after a replacement amplifier is installed. Wiring and mechanical checks are correct, but the parameter set is uncertain. Rather than experimenting with tuning under production pressure, the technician escalates with the machine model, drive firmware, original backup status, alarm history, and photos. The vendor identifies a mismatched motor parameter set quickly.
Train This Before the Next Callout
Choose one critical machine you know and apply the ideas from this chapter while it is healthy.
