Calm technicians are not people who always know the answer. They are people who trust their method when they do not know the answer yet.

Five Principles to Use in the Field

  • Build confidence from process. You may not recognize the fault, but you can still define the symptom, identify boundaries, measure, and eliminate possibilities.
  • Use uncertainty precisely. “I do not know yet” is acceptable when followed by “I have ruled out X and Y, and I am testing Z next.”
  • Keep a personal fault library. Record unusual failures, measurements, photos, and lessons. Pattern recognition grows from reviewed experience.
  • Practice on healthy machines. Learn normal LED states, currents, cycle times, pressures, and network layouts before an emergency. Normal-state knowledge is powerful fault evidence.
  • Avoid identity traps. Being “the PLC guy” or “the mechanical guy” can bias diagnosis. Follow the fault across disciplines.

  • Pretending certainty to protect reputation.
  • Refusing suggestions because they come from less experienced staff.
  • Overvaluing a past fault because it feels familiar.
  • Believing calm means never changing your mind.

  1. State what you know and do not know.
  2. Choose a test that reduces uncertainty.
  3. Invite relevant observations from others.
  4. Change hypotheses freely when evidence changes.
  5. After the event, review what you missed and what you did well.
  6. Add the lesson to your personal reference system.

Scenario: A senior electrician is certain a contactor coil has failed because the same model failed last month. A junior operator mentions the fault happens only with one recipe. The technician follows that clue and finds a recipe-dependent permissive missing due to a wrong format setting. Confidence in method allows experience to bend without embarrassment.

Train This Before the Next Callout

Choose one critical machine you know and apply the ideas from this chapter while it is healthy. For confidence without overconfidence, write down the normal sequence, the key evidence you would want to preserve, and the first three checks you would make if the machine stopped. Then compare your plan with the electrical drawings, PLC diagnostics, maintenance history, and the experience of another technician. A ten-minute rehearsal in daylight can remove several minutes of confusion at night.
