PWM controllers are simple and can work well in small matched systems. MPPT controllers operate the array at a higher-voltage maximum-power point and convert power to the battery voltage, which often improves harvesting and design flexibility.

A practical example

For solar this often means cold panel voltage, hot equipment temperatures, low battery state of charge, motor startup, winter sun, or several cloudy days. The “hard day” usually exposes the design tradeoff.

Suppose you change one variable in the design. Ask what else changes. More power at the same voltage means more current. More battery capacity means longer recharge time unless charging power also increases. More panels in series mean higher string voltage. More panels in parallel mean higher array current. These relationships let you predict consequences before purchasing hardware.

Common beginner mistake

Avoid this: Assuming “MPPT” automatically means the controller is suitable; cheap products may have misleading labels or poor specifications.

Do I know which number is an absolute limit and which is only a nominal rating?

Would the design still make sense on a very hot, cold, cloudy, or high-load day?

Beginner rule: if a calculation or connection affects safety, conductor protection, battery fault current, grid connection, grounding/bonding, structural mounting, or an equipment absolute maximum, verify it with the applicable manual, local code, and a qualified person where required.
