Before you begin: Follow the machine documentation, risk assessment, site procedures and lockout/tagout requirements. Commissioning can expose personnel to electrical energy, stored pressure and unexpected motion. Never defeat a safety function merely to make a test easier. Examples and diagrams are generic and must be checked against the actual machine.
Motor commissioning begins before energization. Verify nameplate data, wiring, insulation condition where required, overload/protection settings, coupling, lubrication, guarding and mechanical freedom.
Why this matters during commissioning
A drive can be configured perfectly and still fail if the motor is wired for the wrong voltage or mechanically bound.
Commissioning procedure
- Record motor nameplate voltage, current, frequency, speed and power.
- Confirm star/delta or other connection matches supply/drive arrangement.
- Check motor cable termination, PE, shield/grounding method and brake wiring if present.
- Verify overload or drive motor data.
- Check shaft/coupling condition and that the load is safe for an initial jog.
Common failure patterns
- Wrong motor connection for available voltage.
- Brake remains applied.
- Motor fan direction/airflow incorrect.
- Mechanical coupling misaligned or transport lock still installed.

FIELD RULE: Never auto-tune or run a motor until its nameplate and mechanical condition have been verified.
