Electric radiator fans may run at several speeds and may be controlled by relays, resistor packs, fan-control modules, or directly by the engine computer. A fan that does not run can cause overheating, especially at low road speed or with air conditioning on.

Before blaming the fan motor, determine whether the vehicle is actually commanding fan operation. Coolant temperature, air-conditioning pressure, vehicle speed, and fault strategies can influence the command.

What to Look For

Do not confuse a reading with a conclusion. A meter showing 12 volts proves voltage is present at that moment; it does not automatically prove the circuit can deliver enough current under load.

Check fuses, power supply, grounds, relays or control modules, connectors, and the motor itself. High-current fan circuits commonly suffer from overheated connectors and relay contacts.

Keep hands and tools away from electric fans whenever the battery is connected. Fans can start unexpectedly even with the engine off.

Beginner Diagnostic Checklist

  • Verify the exact symptom before touching anything.
  • Check battery condition and obvious power/ground connections when relevant.
  • Check the correct fuse and connector condition.

Stop and get help if: you cannot identify a safe test point or the vehicle may move unexpectedly.
