Beginner question: What can I safely prove before buying any part?
High resistance is one of the most important automotive electrical fault types because it can create weak, intermittent, heat-related, or load-dependent symptoms. Unlike a complete open circuit, current still flows—just not well enough.
Typical signs include slow motors, dim lights, hot connectors, clicking starters, charging problems, melted fuse-box terminals, and devices that work until a large electrical load is added.
What to Look For
Work from the symptom outward. Note what still works, what fails at the same time, and whether the fault changes with heat, vibration, rain, or electrical load. These observations often tell you where to measure first.
Voltage-drop testing under load is the preferred method. Place the meter across the wire or connection you want to evaluate while the circuit is carrying current. The reading represents voltage being lost at that section.
A resistance value measured with the circuit off may look tiny and still be unacceptable in a high-current starter or fan circuit. Diagnose the circuit under the conditions that reproduce the problem.
