Beginner question: What can I safely prove before buying any part?
An engine that suddenly stops while driving may have an electrical cause, but the first priority is safety. Move out of traffic if possible, use hazard lights, and avoid repeatedly attempting to restart if there are signs of overheating, oil-pressure loss, burning, or mechanical damage.
Electrical causes include loss of ignition-switched power, a failed main relay, crankshaft-signal loss, charging-system collapse, poor battery connection, ground failure, fuel-pump power loss, immobilizer issues, or control-module power problems.
What to Look For
Work from the symptom outward. Note what still works, what fails at the same time, and whether the fault changes with heat, vibration, rain, or electrical load. These observations often tell you where to measure first.
Observe what remains powered. Does the instrument cluster go dark? Do hazards and radio still work? Does the starter crank? Can the scan tool communicate with the engine module? Does the tachometer or live RPM signal appear while cranking? These details help separate total power loss from engine-control loss.
Intermittent stall diagnosis is often about catching the missing signal during the fault. Recording voltage, module communication, and relay output at the moment of failure is more valuable than replacing likely parts afterward.
