A home PLC laboratory does not need to look like a factory control room. You need enough equipment to practise programming, wiring, fault-finding, industrial networking, analog signals, and HMI development safely.

The biggest mistake is spending the entire budget on the PLC. A controller without a power supply, terminals, switches, sensors, loads, software, and mounting hardware is not a complete training system.

The following builds assume that you already own a suitable Windows laptop. Prices are approximate, include a reasonable allowance for small accessories, and favour new hardware. Keep the main training circuits at 24 V DC.

€500 Build: Siemens LOGO! Fundamentals Lab

This is the lowest-cost sensible option for someone learning basic automation, control circuits, timers, counters, and simple sequences.

Siemens LOGO! starter kits combine the logic module, LOGO! Soft Comfort software, an Ethernet cable and accessories in one package. Current European price comparisons place basic kits at roughly €220 before additional lab components.

With this setup, you can build:

  • Tank-filling control
  • Pump alternation
  • Automatic lighting
  • Product counters
  • Basic alarm systems
  • Small conveyor simulations

LOGO! is technically a programmable logic module rather than a full industrial PLC platform. Its programming environment and project architecture are simpler than Siemens TIA Portal.

That makes it excellent for learning control fundamentals, but less suitable for practising advanced data structures, reusable function blocks, large programs, motion control, or the software architecture used in more complex machines.

Choose this build when your budget is strict and you want physical wiring experience immediately.

€1,000 Build: Schneider Modicon M221 Practical PLC Lab

The €1,000 level allows you to buy a genuine compact PLC while still leaving enough money for useful field devices.

The TM221CE16T operates from 24 V DC and provides Ethernet, nine digital inputs and seven PNP transistor outputs. European street prices vary considerably between distributors, making comparison shopping worthwhile.

EcoStruxure Machine Expert Basic, the programming software for M221 controllers, is available as a free download. This avoids spending several hundred euros on a separate engineering licence.

A physical HMI is deliberately omitted. Use the laptop for monitoring, animation, Modbus TCP experiments, or a basic Node-RED dashboard. The money produces more educational value when spent on sensors, analog signals, terminals, and fault-insertion switches.

At €2,000, the goal should be a small but realistic machine-control platform rather than a collection of unrelated modules.

  • Siemens KTP400 Basic HMI: approximately €480–€500 including VAT
  • Analog output signal board: approximately €120–€140

  • DIN rail, terminals, protection, wiring and enclosure: €170
  • Small Ethernet switch and cables: €50

Estimated total: €1,950–€2,000

Siemens currently lists an S7-1200 G2 starter package at €710 before tax, including STEP 7 Basic V21. The G2 controller provides integrated digital I/O and is intended for basic automation, motion, safety and data-transparency applications.

A KTP400 Basic panel is currently listed by one European automation retailer at approximately €402.50 before tax. It is configured through WinCC Basic within the TIA Portal environment.

This setup allows you to create a portfolio-quality project containing:

  • PLC and HMI communication
  • Manual, setup and automatic modes
  • Structured machine sequences
  • Alarm history and diagnostics
  • Analog input and output control
  • Recipe settings
  • Production counters and trends
  • Ethernet communication
  • Device function blocks
  • Factory acceptance test documentation

You could later add a VFD, remote I/O, IO-Link master, safety relay, or second PLC. Do not add a mains-powered drive and motor until you can install and protect them correctly.

Which Build Should You Choose?

Choose the €500 LOGO! build when you are completely new and want to learn basic logic and wiring.

Choose the €1,000 M221 build when you want the highest amount of practical equipment per euro and do not need Siemens-specific experience.

Choose the €2,000 S7-1200 build when your career target is European machine building, maintenance, panel building, or Siemens-based automation work.

Whichever budget you choose, build one complete project rather than twenty disconnected exercises. Include drawings, an I/O list, alarm documentation, test records, software backups, and deliberately inserted faults.

The most valuable part of a home PLC lab is not the hardware sitting on the DIN rail. It is your ability to demonstrate what happens when a sensor fails, an interlock is missing, communication disappears, or an operator presses the wrong button.
