A diagnostic trouble code identifies a condition the control module detected. It does not automatically identify the failed part. A code mentioning an oxygen sensor may be caused by wiring, an exhaust leak, a mixture problem or the sensor itself. A code for ‘circuit low’ describes an electrical observation, not a purchase recommendation.

Freeze-frame data is valuable because it records selected operating conditions when a fault was recognized. Engine speed, load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed and fuel-trim values can tell you whether the problem occurred cold, hot, at idle, during acceleration or on the highway. That context often narrows the test plan dramatically.

Pay attention to code families. Circuit codes, range/performance codes and correlation codes suggest different diagnostic directions. A circuit code often makes you inspect power, ground, wiring and terminals early. A range/performance code may mean the signal is electrically valid but physically implausible. Correlation codes tell you that two related measurements disagree.

Record codes before clearing them. Clearing codes can erase freeze frame, reset readiness monitors and remove clues. Diagnose the symptom and system; do not use the parts store as your troubleshooting method.
