Your purpose is reliable production, not heroic wrenching
Maintenance is the work of keeping equipment safe, available, repeatable, and understandable. New technicians often imagine the job as a stream of dramatic repairs. In a good plant, much of the value comes from preventing the dramatic repair in the first place. You are paid to restore function, but also to reduce uncertainty: which machine is at risk, which part failed, why it failed, what is temporary, and what should change so the same problem is less likely tomorrow.
A filling line stops three times in a week because an operator keeps resetting a drive overload. The fastest action is another reset. The maintenance action is to verify load, current, mechanical drag, parameter settings, cooling, and the conditions at the moment of trip. The difference is not speed versus slowness; it is restoring production without throwing away evidence.
Field habit: Ask yourself after each job: Did I make the machine safer? Did I prove the failure mode? Did I leave useful information for the next person?
Common trap: Do not build your identity around being the person who can always ‘get it running somehow.’ Temporary tricks that hide defects eventually become permanent risks.
The four jobs inside maintenance
Most maintenance roles combine four different jobs: breakdown response, planned maintenance, condition checking, and improvement work. Breakdown response is visible, urgent, and emotionally rewarding. Planned maintenance is repetitive but keeps known wear mechanisms under control. Condition checking is about noticing changes before function is lost. Improvement work removes repeat failures, poor access, weak documentation, and bad design assumptions.
A technician may spend the morning replacing a failed proximity sensor, the afternoon checking a lubrication route, and the final hour adding labels to an unlabeled terminal strip. Only one of those tasks looks dramatic, but all three create availability.
Field habit: Track your week by these four categories. If nearly all your time is emergency response, that is useful evidence about the maintenance system itself.
Common trap: Do not judge value only by how dirty your hands are or how quickly everyone applauds after a restart.

Learn to separate symptom, fault, and cause
A symptom is what people can observe: ‘the conveyor stopped.’ A fault is the failed condition you can prove: ‘the motor overload is open.’ A cause explains why that condition occurred: ‘the drive-end bearing seized and increased motor load.’ Keeping these levels separate makes troubleshooting cleaner and reports more useful.
If you stop at ‘overload tripped,’ the machine may restart after reset and fail again. If you stop at ‘bearing failed,’ you still may miss why the bearing ran dry or was overloaded. Not every incident needs a deep investigation, but you should know which level you have actually reached.
Field habit: When you write notes, use three lines: Symptom / Proven fault / Suspected or confirmed cause.
Common trap: Avoid writing ‘fixed’ when you only cleared the symptom. It hides uncertainty from the next shift.
Reputation is built on predictability
Experienced production teams trust technicians who communicate clearly, work safely, keep promises, and avoid random part swapping. You do not need to know everything on day one. You do need to show a repeatable method. Say what you know, what you do not know, what you are checking, and what risk remains.
A new technician who says ‘I have 24 V at the sensor, but the PLC input is not changing; I am checking the cable next’ often inspires more confidence than someone who says ‘probably the PLC’ and disappears with a screwdriver.
Field habit: Make your work easy to follow. Put removed wires back exactly, mark temporary changes, close panels, and update the job record before memory fades.
Common trap: Bluffing is expensive. Plants remember the person who confidently replaced three good components far longer than the person who asked for a drawing.
