Before you begin: Follow the machine documentation, risk assessment, site procedures and lockout/tagout requirements. Commissioning can expose personnel to electrical energy, stored pressure and unexpected motion. Never defeat a safety function merely to make a test easier. Examples and diagrams are generic and must be checked against the actual machine.
Control power is the nervous system of a modern machine. Stable 24 VDC must be verified at the power supply and at remote loads because wiring resistance, undersized conductors, short circuits or overloaded supplies can create intermittent commissioning faults.
Why this matters during commissioning
Many “PLC faults” are actually power-quality faults. A remote I/O rack may boot normally with no load and reset when several solenoids energize.
Commissioning procedure
- Verify power-supply input selection and output adjustment.
- Measure unloaded 24 VDC and loaded voltage during representative actuator operation.
- Check distribution fuses/electronic breakers and common returns.
- Measure voltage at the farthest remote I/O and sensor groups.
- Review power-supply current reserve and diagnostic contacts.
Common failure patterns
- Voltage set too high or too low.
- 0 V common disconnected between field and PLC circuit where required.
- Inrush from valves/contactors collapsing supply.
- Multiple 24 V supplies unintentionally tied together.
Useful measurement
A simple voltage trend or min/max capture while cycling valves and contactors can expose dips that a steady multimeter reading misses.

- Observed value / observed state
- Pass/fail result and any deviation
- Name/date or responsible person where required
FIELD RULE: Check 24 VDC under load, not only with everything idle.
